Espanola, as we know it today, is a town in New Mexico that was initially settled in 1598 as a railroad village. In 1925, it was named Espanola and officially incorporated as a city. While many buildings and homes of historical significance were torn down in the 1980s, the mission church was preserved.
It is also a significant place to learn about the early Spanish settlers, historical attractions, including the Puye Cliff Dwellings and Los Luceros Historic Site.
The Puye Cliff Dwellings are a National Historic Landmark. The area includes cave dwellings, two levels of cliff dwellings, and surface dwellings. These were used between 900 and 1580, and demonstrate a variety of building techniques. Tours can be arranged to explore the site and learn about the history.
Los Luceros Historic Site is one of the most scenic and historic properties in the state. The main attraction is the 5,700 square foot, 18th-century adobe home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
There are also different cuisines to enjoy at Espanola, New Mexico. Espanola is located at the border of Santa Fe Counties and Rio Arriba. It is situated between Taos and Santa Fe, and half an hour from Los Alamos.
